Using Third-Party Data to Target Customers – Is it that Bad?

2.28.11  In the last several weeks I have been involved in a series of conversations regarding how firms think about using data to place more relevant messages in front of prospects and customers.

By this I mean, how comfortable are companies with using third-party data sources to influence the messages consumers see. For example, my washing machine broke the other day and I went online to find some information about potential fixes, to see if others are having the same issue, and to hopefully find a solution. My Facebook Hacked! Why it Was Good and Bad Experience

Got Hacked

2.21.11  Last Thursday morning I got a text from a friend asking me if the “iPad news was spam”. At first, I was not sure what he was referring to so I checked the news to see what was out there. Sure enough, some rumors were swirling around regarding the upcoming release of the  iPad. Marketing Speak: Channels v. Ecosystem

I recently got into a conversation with some colleagues about how the terms “channels” and “ecosystem” should be used. The conversation got started around how they are mostly synonymous as it relates to communication with customers. I agree that in many cases they can be used interchangeably, but here is a quick perspective on the topic:

Channels: These are are the individual methods that companies use to communicate with customers. Examples of channels include stores, call centers, Websites, social media tactics (i.e. blogs, Facebook, etc), Mobile Applications, and the other various means companies have to communicate. « Read the rest of this entry »
